Introduction
Earlier this season, we began working with a residential property in Bedford facing the familiar challenges of shaded turf—thinning grass, inconsistent growth, and areas struggling to thrive under mature trees. Despite regular mowing and seasonal fertilization by the homeowner, some sections of the lawn had gradually declined over time.
During this project, our goal has been clear—protect the lawn from summer stressors, strengthen plant health, and encourage new growth in both shaded and sun-exposed areas. By focusing on soil health, nutrient balance, and pest management, we’ve been working to transform this yard into a more resilient, lush lawn.
Late Summer Update
Thanks to a targeted late summer program, we’re seeing promising progress.
One of the key steps was applying a professional insect control treatment. Late summer is when pests like chinch bugs and grubs can become active and threaten grass that is already stressed from shade and heat. By addressing insects now, we’re helping the lawn maintain its growth and avoid damage before fall.
We also applied a Brix Builder, a foliar treatment that enhances the plant’s sugar levels. This naturally boosts the grass’s energy reserves, helping it recover from summer stress and better resist disease and environmental pressures. Following this, our summer booster fertilizer provided essential nutrients to encourage thicker growth and recovery, giving the lawn the support it needs to flourish.
Another important step this season was liquid aeration, which helps improve water, nutrient, and air movement into the soil. This is particularly beneficial in shaded areas where root development can be slower, allowing the lawn to better absorb everything it needs to remain healthy and strong.
Troubles Along the Border
Not every section of the lawn had an easy summer. One border area receives significantly more sun than the majority of the yard, and it had dried out and gone dormant because the homeowner’s hose wasn’t long enough to reach it. By switching to a longer hose, the homeowner was able to water this area consistently, and we’re happy to see it beginning to recover. Small adjustments like this can make a big difference in keeping the entire lawn healthy.
Looking Ahead
The late summer treatments are setting this lawn up for a strong finish to the season. With pests under control, nutrients replenished, and soil conditions improved, the lawn is well-positioned to continue its transformation.
Photos show progress of lawn after treatments, along with the troubled area prior to receiving water.
